How might a brand help an NGO run more efficiently?
AHA! Learning Center is an NGO that offers after-school programs that fill in the gaps of Philippine public school education.
This is done through alternative learning experiences in the arts, humanities, and technology. AHA believes that those who have less in life should always have more in education. They teach their students how to become independent and critical thinkers through quality education. They’ve been around since 2009, having served over 2,000 students since then.
For us to design a brand for AHA, we needed to be part of AHA.
We volunteered regularly to get to know the center, its teachers, and the kids. We wanted to know what made the center different from other orgs of its kind and what made the kids come back to it every weekend. Many of the kids we met grew up with the center, having progressed from grade school to high school under the center’s care.
We took on AHA under the Helping Half program of our studio. The brand had to be cost-efficient, easy to reproduce, but still impactful enough for investors and volunteers.
The result is a fun, child-friendly, and functional brand. The logo is a custom logotype built around our exclamation point. The whole logo is set at a tilt to emphasize that “A-ha!” moment. Through set colors, free fonts, and simple layouts, the identity is easy to use and apply.
With the help of the interns Una Gil, Zoe de Ocampo, Cody Jalandoni, and Roy Covera, we found out that while the students were constant, the volunteers were not. We wanted to design something that could help with volunteer retention and education.
Our interns designed a foldable volunteer kit that encourages volunteers to get to know their students and to keep coming back to the center every weekend.
Anyone can be anything, especially with the power of education.
Our exclamation point flipped over is an outline of a person, which can be filled out any which way. Whether student or volunteer, we wanted our brand to help facilitate dreaming and aspiring for a bigger future. As Jaton Zulueta, founder of AHA always says, mangarap tayo ng gising. Hope and dream with our eyes wide open.
